Tilden Has Become a Weekend Park This Fall

On a weekday morning at Lone Oak Staging, the Loop Road into the Tilden Nature Area is closed between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Signs send hikers and cyclists down Wildcat Creek Trail, past the Environmental Education Center and the Little Farm, to reach the trails beyond the work zone. This weekday closure began September 21 and is scheduled to run until late October. On Saturday morning the same road is open, the Redwood Valley Railway is running, and the carousel near Central Park Drive is turning.

That is how Tilden works this fall. From Monday to Friday during working hours, the East Bay Regional Park District closes sections of the park in rotation for tree and brush removal. On evenings and weekends, the trails reopen. The park's attraction calendar was already weighted toward Saturday and Sunday, so the full park and the full lineup of attractions now meet on weekends.

Crews Keep Office Hours

The District describes its 2026 Tilden program as several large fuels-reduction projects running from May through December. Crews are removing eucalyptus trees, heavy brush, and woody debris. Large machinery is working in the project areas, closures are signed and blocked off, and visitors are asked to stay out of work zones. The summer projects along Golf Course Drive are finished. Several others are still active or near the end of their windows this fall.

Project area What it affects Posted window
Jewel Lake and Loop Road, Tilden Nature Area Wildcat Creek Trail, Jewel Lake Trail, Loop Road; Wildcat View and New Woodland group camps closed during the work week July through October
Near the Merry-Go-Round Central Park Drive and the Merry-Go-Round area; the Merry-Go-Round stays open August through December
Near the Botanic Garden along Wildcat Canyon Road Wildcat Canyon Road, Park Hills Road, Shasta Road, Selby Trail August–September on the summary page
Near the Tilden Service Yard Vollmer Peak Trail Sometime between June and October

Two rows need more detail. For the area near the Botanic Garden, the District's more detailed project overview, updated June 11, 2026, describes about 15 acres across from the Botanic Garden and the Brazilian Room and along Park Hills and Shasta roads. It gives a start date of August 3 and says work continues through October, with more work possible later in the year. The work includes removing eucalyptus and pine and thinning dense oak-bay woodland. Anyone driving Wildcat Canyon Road on a weekday in October should expect activity there, even though the summary table still says August–September.

The Merry-Go-Round project is set to last the longest. Contractor bid-walk notes call for that work to be finished by the start of December. A weekday closure of Central Park Drive between the Merry-Go-Round and the Meadows Picnic Area ran through Friday, September 25. The roadway was open on weekends, and the parking, restrooms, and picnic areas at both ends stayed open.

Some closures have nothing to do with tree crews. The upper 0.43 miles of Laurel Canyon Trail in the Tilden Nature Area remain closed until further notice because of storm damage, and the District updated that notice on September 29. These notices change week to week, so check the alerts on the District's Tilden park page before heading out.

The Calendar Already Leaned Toward Saturday

The work schedule fits Tilden this fall because most of the park's attractions already run on weekends. The District's Fall 2026 attractions sheet, effective September through October, shows the pattern.

The Redwood Valley Railway steam train runs Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., at $5 a ride or $20 for five. Children under two ride free. Next door, Golden Gate Live Steamers gives free rides on its miniature trains on Sundays from noon to 3 p.m., when weather and volunteer staffing allow. The Tilden Merry-Go-Round is open Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at $4 a ride or $24 for seven. Native Here Nursery is open for in-person shopping only on Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Docent-led tours at the Botanic Garden are on Saturdays and holidays at 2 p.m. and on Sundays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Weekday visits are still possible. These places keep regular hours on weekdays:

  • Regional Parks Botanic Garden. Open daily and free, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting in October. The West Gate closes at 4:30 p.m. from October 1.
  • Environmental Education Center. Free, Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Little Farm. Free and open during regular park hours.

All three are close to active work areas. The Little Farm and the Environmental Education Center sit on the Loop Road detour. The Botanic Garden is across Wildcat Canyon Road from the project described in the June overview. A weekday visit works best with a destination in mind and some flexibility about how to get there.

Lake Anza has already shifted to fall. Weekend swimming hours ended September 27, and through October 31 swimming is at your own risk with no lifeguards on duty.

At Brook Road, a Trail Segment Is Closing for Good

One fall project is not tree work, and it will change the map permanently. Near Brook Road, the District is restoring Wildcat Creek. The project page says part of the Wildcat Gorge Trail there will be fenced during construction and then closed permanently.

The work centers on a concrete creek crossing that blocks native rainbow trout from migrating. Crews are removing it and rebuilding the channel with natural rock and bioengineered features that improve water flow and fish passage. They are also replacing invasive plants with native vegetation to stabilize the banks. Two new ADA-accessible bridges will reconnect the trails: a 30-foot span over a small tributary and an 80-foot span over Wildcat Creek. Together they form new trail loops. The plans also include an accessible path to a creekside observation deck, two ADA parking stalls created by regrading part of the existing lot, and bioretention features that filter parking-lot runoff before it reaches the creek.

Granite Rock Company is the contractor, and the construction period runs from July through December 2026. The District plans to reopen access by January 2027. Hikers who use the Wildcat Gorge Trail regularly will return to a different route than the one they left. The new route is laid out around the creek, where the old trail followed a crossing that blocked the trout.

An October Weekend, Hour by Hour

Most of October's scheduled events fall on Saturdays and Sundays, and they can fill a weekend.

  1. Saturday, October 3, 10 a.m. The Friends of the Regional Parks Botanic Garden hold their Fall Plant Sale at 1550 Wildcat Canyon Road until 2 p.m. Members can shop from 9 a.m. Native Here Nursery's Saturday hours are the same, so both stops fit into one morning.
  2. Late morning. The Merry-Go-Round opens at 11 a.m., and so does the Redwood Valley Railway.
  3. Afternoon. With no weekday detour in place, the Loop Road gives direct access into the Tilden Nature Area toward Jewel Lake and the Little Farm.
  4. Sunday, noon to 3 p.m. Golden Gate Live Steamers runs its free rides alongside the Redwood Valley Railway.

Later in the month, the Botanic Garden's Friends group has several more programs. Butterfly Walks are scheduled for Saturday, October 17, from 1 to 2 p.m., and registration is required. The Family-Friendly CA Native People & Plants Tour is Sunday, October 25, from 2 to 3 p.m., and the Spooky Plant Tour is Saturday, October 31, at the same hour. On Saturday, October 24, the District offers Hiking with Poles Training, with a short practice hike, starting at 8:45 a.m.

The Exceptions

A few dates don't follow the weekend pattern. On Indigenous Peoples' Day, Monday, October 12, the Merry-Go-Round and the steam train run holiday hours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Because it falls on a Monday, check the park alerts that morning for any posted weekday closures.

On Tuesday, October 20, the Brazilian Room hosts a Hispanic Heritage Celebration from 4 to 8 p.m. That start time lines up with the end of the posted 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekday work window. The Brazilian Room's events calendar is full, so the District offers tours only during scheduled open houses. The October 6 open house has been canceled.

The weekend schedule continues into November. The District's Tilden calendar lists four programs for Sunday, November 1: The Fascinating World of Birds at 8 a.m., Sunday Storytime at 10:30 a.m., Good Night Farm at 3:30 p.m., and Cafecito in Nature – con raíces y recuerdos at 6 p.m. By then the Loop Road closure is scheduled to be over, and the work near the Merry-Go-Round is expected to wrap up by early December.
